  • Most people die with all their music still inside

Hi everyone! I've been MIA for a few weeks on the challenges but it's been hectic trying to find some kind of health insurance of myself on the private market and the search isn't over yet. Hence my choice of this song, which was also coincidentally performed at Ted Kennedy's memorial service. I think it was supposed to be symbolic of his many fights against the odds to help the poor and other underdog groups, but it may as well also describe my quest for a decent full-time job with health insurance or even an affordable plan for myself thru the private market. No lol on either of those.

Another reason I recorded this one is because I sang it at a live k-show on Labor Day weekend in honor of Kennedy and it went pretty well, unlike this one with a different version for the backing track.

From the Broadway show Man Of La Mancha:

The Impossible Dream (The Quest)- Man Of La Mancha

I just had to get in on this challenge because I've already seen so many good songs submitted by singers I know are far better than me at showtunes, including several hear who specialize in that genre.

My listens and comments-

7. Jenny- I've heard very few songs from this show, but I've always been a big fan of the novel and a couple of the films that were made of it. I never heard this tune but you belt it out well and great job of holding that long high note towards the end. The song reminds me of some of the crowd scene anthems like A New Argentina, that are in Evita, one of my favorite musicals.

9. Kittenkat- Man, you just puurrred that one beautifully! And that cat in your pic is so cute. I've seen the film of this musical so I've heard Rene sing it as well as once by an old friend at a small k-show my friends and I went to on my last birthday. Like my friend, you really excel and seem to prefer showtunes. My friend has only sang in the chorus of a few of them but you could clearly sing some lead roles. She get a laugh out of how her son has heard her sing this one and will sing along himself, even saying "that's showbiz kid!"lol!

5. Mariner- Bravo! I'll bet you've played that role onstage somewhere, maybe in community theater, but I knew your voice would be perfect for this one, esp. with your Brit voice. Maybe even added a little cockney to the accent here, lol? I'm so tickled you let us watch you act out the song with the rocking back and forth as well as the stage gestures. I only saw this show once, at a community theater production my parents took me to in my childhood, because I'm not really a fan of the pre-1960s musicals, but you entertained me well here and redeemed the song for me.

10.-Woof and alisha- This was a great duet, well done on a tough song. Actually everything from that show is difficult to sing. Woof, you had Moranis's voice down really well on that nerdy, nasal tone he used and after trying a couple times to sing Skid Row, my fav Seymour song from the show, I know exactly how much range that guy actually has and how under-rated he is as a singer. alisha, you sounded very smooth and strong in the Ellen Green part of the song.

11.- Rachel and Annie- This is simply gorgeous! Such a pretty and moving song. My wife and I have been waiting for over a year to see the touring production of this show, which will be here in a couple weeks. Can't wait to hear this one and the rest of them onstage as it's by the composer (Stephen Schwartz) of my favorite musical Godspell. In fact next year I'll get to see a production of one of his little-known musicals, Working.

Edited to add:

Sorry sports fans that I was interrupted for a few days from my listens. Hope to finish tonight and that you will all be checking back tonight and tomorrow before the challenge ends. I've been very busy but it's been time well spent as my wife and I got out a lot more often than usual the last few days as we celebrated out tenth wedding anniversary.

12. Rachel, Will, and Anne- I've seen this show live at a national touring production (with bad, cheap ticket seats unfortunately) and this time I was able to really hear the words and pick out the voices.  That long note on "Love" was truly awesome (by Anne I think?) Outstanding job by all of you and such a cool song. I heard that some high school age girls are going to sing this at my church next month so I'm definitely attending that week's service. Was that really Will on both male parts around the song's middle? It actually seemed to be two somewhat distinct male voice styles there.... hmmmm maybe just getting old and hearing is going on me...

15. Livinginy and Chris- This was so well matched together. You both have very strong, well-trained and beautiful voices on such a tough but pretty song. Awesome job and props for Cathy on that powerful and chilling "Anywhere" at the end of the song.

16. Howard- Thank you so much for suggesting and hosting this challenge. I'm having so much enjoyment hearing all these great song choices and performances that it wouldn't really matter to me if I hadn't turned in a song this time. I must admit that, movie musical snob that I am, I never got around to seeing this film even tho I say Swayze in several other films and was always impressed that he had the goods as an actor. Never expected he could sing and I honestly don't  know if I ever heard this on the radio tho the words and tune seemed kind of familiar listening to you.
No idea how the composer sounded but you sounded wonderful and extra props for that long note you nailed at the end. Swayze was a good guy and talented person. It's sad he's gone so soon and suffered so much before that.

17. Dreamergirl- Another show of many that I've seen a national touring production of and also my favorite song from the show. You covered all the shades and moods of it well. Wish we could have seen your face during it but maybe you have issues with spontaneous combustion, lol! Way to choose and tough one and do it justice.

23. fofun- This song choice was perfect for your voice and the best one I've ever heard you sing! I remember this song from the movie and it's so cute and funny, really suits you. Sang it just the way it should be done and what's even more funny is that your voice here sounds a lot like Randy Newman(whose voice is an acquired taste for most but one I like), only a little more nerdy and raspy.

36. SCCA- Wow! Your voice control, power and vibrato are simply magnificent. If I had a voice like that I'd sing showtunes all the time. Would love to hear you sing Music Of The Night as that one would really show off all you've got going. Maybe we'll get a duet from you and Cathy sometime on this South Pacific song seeing that you both sang it for the challenge.

42. suecaz- Left my comment on redkaraoke as I'm a fellow member, but wanted to publicly welcome you here.

43. Sandysongbird- Hi there, my friend! When I clicked on the play button and saw how somber and serious you looked on cam, I did a double take on how unSandylike you looked. Then saw it was a tune from Phantom and that explained it all. You were girding yourself for the challenge of a long tough song, but boy did you rise to the challenge and nail it. I didn't know you had so much upper range control and power. Bet you were even surprised yourself how well you hit and held that last note at the end.
Glad to see you let yourself smile right as the recording ended. You beat the difficulty of the song and deserved to be happy about it.

Now you just need to beat that perfection thing and no more excuses for deleting songs after you submit them for the challenge. This song proves you are really talented and we deserve to hear them as the gifts you give to us. Very impressive job here kiddo!
You're motivating me to get that song from Once ready next month, hee, hee!

Thanks Tomac ...you always go to so much trouble to give feedback ...just listened to you & you of course do a fine sing every time & this is no exception.

We have been catching up on listens over dinner ...which had to be omelet tonight becuse of too much sightseeing & singing ...& not enough shopping ...LOL

oh well it tasted pretty good but now I need dessert!

Anyway the listens more than compensated ...who needs food when you can have such wonderful show tunes to listen to? ...well ...I need both ...blaming the hunger pangs on this cooler weather. Did you know you can make a chocolate cake in the microwave in a few minutes ...in a mug?  ;D well you can! 8)

Good evening everyone and Happy Birthday Pinky  I thought I'd be different and greet you in red, rather than pink.

Just catching up on my listens, and hope to be in chat later.

I'd like to post another song. It's from Carousel and I think it's a wonderful song

You'll Never Walk Alone

    • Next to Normal Mashup - I need views and LIKES!

Hi guys!  Thought I stop by quickly to say I haven't heard anything about that audition yet BUT I did get a Cablevision commercial which I've been up since 4am for and just got home at 11pm this evening.  So am beat.  It'll be a funny commercial which you may not see me in so it wasn't that big of a deal but glad the agency thought to call me in for it.  Keep your fingers crossed for the other commercial, if I don't hear anything soon then I didn't get it!

Oh boy, Jenny!  I have a ton of listening to do, so wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy  behind... have a lot of work on just now and keep getting a way of putting it off.

Going to update the playlist and get cracking with a bit of both!

Oh and thank you EVERYONE for last night's chat... Oh what a night (sings) we had a load of fun and a reasonable crowd turn up!  KIA!!!!!  Was so good to catch you - there's nothing better than a live (insert naughty word here) and acoustic/vocalist to soothe the soul - magic!!!!

Only shouting you out cos you're pretty, wonderful, funny, talented and oh just we have missed you so much!  YAY to new computer... sob bye bye Windows 98... :D  OMG! I just remember what you said about the ARCADE... runs to put loving arms around MY games LOL!

To everyone I haven't named...  thank you for always making my Friday nights the very best they could be, every one of you is incredibly important to me - having live chat has opened up a whole new world of close friendships - I just love and feel at awe in how we can do this together.
