This challenge is open to all. It runs from Tuesday September 15 until September 22, 2009 at 6PM EDT.
PLEASE READ THE GUIDELINES AND THEME DESCRIPTION CAREFULLY BEFORE POSTING.
PURPOSE - The purpose of the EAW Music Challenge is to encourage people to create and/or promote new music each week and to give them a forum to have their songs heard. There is no judging involved.
HOW IT WORKS - Every Tuesday at 6PM a topic featuring a new theme will be posted on this board. Those wishing to participate are invited to post links to their songs that match the theme. You may post a song with a link from any online music/singing site you belong to. Over the years a nice little community has sprung up around these challenges. We invite you to participate but be aware that here everyone is very supportive of each other. Amateurs and professionals are both welcome. You do not have to be a great singer to participate. No flaming is allowed on this board. This is not a contest. There is no judging. It is merely an opportunity to hear and be heard by others. You can post or merely listen and interact with the others who post here. Please follow the detailed guidelines which are posted below and at the top of each new challenge thread. Have fun!
CHALLENGE GUIDELINES -
1. Post links to ONE OR TWO songs that fit the theme. You may post a THIRD one on or after Thursday. You may post a FOURTH song link on or after Saturday. Your song can be a new song or one that was previously recorded.
2. . That means, if you post 2 song links you should listen to 12 others over the course of the 7 days of the challenge, a little less than 2 a day. If you post 3 song links, listen to 18 others and so on. You may, of course, listen to more if you choose. Listening is the most important part of this challenge
3. We prefer to listen to the whole song. Try not to listen to the same people every day. Give new people a chance as well.
4. You don't need to post a song to listen but you need to listen if you post a song. It's best to post earlier in the challenge. But you can post up until the end.
5. Please avoid making multiple posts in a row (spamming) by going back and modifying your posts if you left something out.
6. Remember to post the name of your song. For easy instructions on how to HOT LINK and post your song title, click EAW FAQ.
7. Please do not post glitter or large graphics as feedback or in the thread. Please keep to the standard font, size and color that is already provided[/] - this helps prevent your songs and comments from getting lost in a sea of shifting fonts and colors. For your song title only, use 14pt font size and bold. This will help your song stand out. For more information on how to do this, check the EAW FAQ.[/]

The theme for this challenge is Musical Theater/Theatre[/]

I spent the latter half of the summer working "On Broadway" as a participant in the "Give My Regards To Broadway - Season 2" contest on SingSnap. There I met another wonderful group of very talented folks who love to recreate great performances from stage musicals. We held "auditions" in late July, started the contest with 50 participants and after 7 rounds, named the winners just last week. Yours truly placed second with Butlersoft taking top honors. BTW, I've invited all the contestants to join us here this week. So if you notice a new EAW participant, please be sure to make them feel welcome.

Since I've still got musicals on my mind, it should come as no surprise that I've selected Musical Theater as this week's theme. It doesn't matter whether you look to Broadway in New York, The West End in London, or even your local community theater. Just sing us songs you love from your favorite stage musicals.

There are many songs from stage musicals available on SingSnap and many others available from other sources. And if you are looking for a long lost show, check out hamienet.com. There you will find simple, downloadable backing tracks from many long lost shows. In most cases Hamienet offers the ability to transpose the key and change the tempo. Also, you might be surprised by how many movie musicals have been turned into stage musicals in different parts of the world, so be sure to check wikipedia.org for your favorites.

Here are some other links that will help you select a show and explore its songs...

I will be posting a new song for this Challenge but to start us off here is a duet I performed, with myself, for Give My Regards To Broadway - Season 2...

Out There from The Hunchback of Notre Dame originally performed by Tony Jay and Tom Hulce

Now, you might claim that this song comes from a Disney movie. However, this film has already been turned into a stage musical which has been performed in Germany and elsewhere. There are rumors that it will be coming to Broadway in the United States soon.

Okay, here's one of mine...I hope it officially fits the theme.  I know it's in the movie musical, but not sure about the stage musical.  Anyhow, I like to sing this one when I'm pretending I really have some "confidence".

I Have Confidence...The Sound of Music

Now, maybe I'll have enough confidence to leave this song up all week...fingers crossed.

Hi Sandy: Perfectly acceptable for this Challenge. In fact, to make it easy on everyone, as long as the film has a stage musical counterpart, any song from either the stage or screen versions is acceptable.

I'm not going to be having any time to be recording something new this week...

But I did grab a half of a duet a couple of weeks ago that should fit quite snuggly into the theme...

Suddenly Seymour

Make sure you stop the singsnap player and click "play" on the widget.  It's a much cleaner recording.

Ooh!  One of my favorite genres for this week's challenge.  Thanks for the theme, Howard!!!  I have a lot of songs from musicals, including this one from one of my favorites, Wicked:

For Good (A duet with Annegirl1981)

And, if there are any fellow RENTheads out there, especially a soprano, who would like to join Will and I on the following:

Seasons of Love

;D  Excellent start folks. The first 10 songs are up in less than 2 hours and all showcase the creativity and talent of the EAW family. And a special shoutout to ColonelMac. I'm not yet a member of Red Karaoke... I'm wondering, is this a Russian karaoke website? ;-)... Regardless, you did a terrific job on Makin' Whoopee.

Keep 'em coming folks.

Hey Howard, you know I love this theme. I'm not sure if I'll get a chance to post a song but I definitely will be listening to some of you folks sing.

Those of you who have discovered our new Instant Message feature, if you have questions about how to operate it, click on the word ONLINE at the bottom of the page, then click on MENU in the upper left of the box that opens, and, finally, click on HELP. That will give you info on how it operates. Have fun, folks!

As promised, here is a new recording for the Musical Theater/Theatre Challenge/Showcase. This song is from the film Dirty Dancing which was adapted for the stage in 2004 as Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story On Stage.

This stage version premiered in Australia and has had sellout runs in Germany, London's West End and successful runs in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Chicago, Boston and Los Angeles. A New York production is rumored to be in the planning stage.

You've probably heard this song quite a bit over the last couple of days but I want to honor the memory of Patrick Swayze and this is the best way to do that.
