EAW "The Big Dance" Showcase Thingie CII
« on: March 24, 2009, 10:10:51 pm »
I am delighted to be launching this week’s challenge!

This challenge is open to all. It runs from Tuesday Mar. 24th until Mar. 31st 2009 at 6PM EDT.

PLEASE READ THE GUIDELINES AND THEME DESCRIPTION CAREFULLY BEFORE POSTING.

PURPOSE - The purpose of the EAW Music Challenge is to encourage people to create and/or promote new music each week and to give them a forum to have their songs heard. There is no judging involved.

HOW IT WORKS - Every Tuesday at 6PM a topic featuring a new theme will be posted on this board. Those wishing to participate are invited to post links to their songs that match the theme. You may post a song with a link from any online music/singing site you belong to. Over the years a nice little community has sprung up around these challenges. We invite you to participate but be aware that here everyone is very supportive of each other. Amateurs and professionals are both welcome. You do not have to be a great singer to participate. No flaming is allowed on this board. This is not a contest. There is no judging. It is merely an opportunity to hear and be heard by others. You can post or merely listen and interact with the others who post here. Please follow the detailed guidelines which are posted below and at the top of each new challenge thread. Have fun!

CHALLENGE GUIDELINES -

1. Post links to ONE OR TWO songs that fit the theme. You may post a THIRD one on or after Thursday.  You may post a FOURTH song link on or after Saturday.  Your song can be a new song or one that was previously recorded.

2. For EACH song link you post, listen to at least SIX other people’s songs and leave feedback. That means, if you post 2 song links you should listen to 12 others over the course of the 7 days of the challenge, a little less than 2 a day. If you post 3 song links, listen to 18 others and so on. You may, of course, listen to more if you choose. Listening is the most important part of this challenge. Supporting and experiencing others is what it’s about.

3. We prefer to listen to the whole song. Try not to listen to the same people every day. Give new people a chance as well.

4. You don't need to post a song to listen but you need to listen if you post a song. It's best to post earlier in the challenge. But you can post up until the end.

5. Please avoid making multiple posts in a row (spamming) by going back and modifying your posts if you left something out.

6. Remember to post the name of your song. For easy instructions on how to HOT LINK and post your song title, click EAW FAQ.

7. Please do not post glitter or large graphics as feedback or in the thread. Please keep to the standard font, size and color that is already provided - this helps prevent your songs and comments from getting lost in a sea of shifting fonts and colors. For your song title only, use 14pt font size and bold. This will help your song stand out. For more information on how to do this, check the EAW FAQ.

New challenge themes are announced every Tuesday at 6PM EDT.  This current challenge will run until Mar. 31st, 2009, 6PM EDT.

The theme for this challenge will be:  The Big Dance!!

Of course, "The Big Dance” may refer to the NCAA Men’s or Women’s Division I Basketball Championships.  This single elimination Basketball tournament takes place over three weeks at sites across the United States, and the national semifinals (the Final Four) have become one of the nation's most prominent sporting events. In recent years, friendly wagering on the event has become something of a national pastime, spawning countless office pools that attract expert fans and novices alike. (Even President Obama picked out his "bracket").....All games of the tournament are broadcast on TV and have become very popular. For our purposes, I will leave this pretty open to interpretation… I would like to see everyone post a song that simply brings back a fond College or HS memory, or perhaps contains a key word in the title or lyrics to any of the major cities or States the games are played at, or the teams that participate in the tournament, which are numerous!  It could also include any of the words used to describe the theme in general, like "Dance" (or pertaining to dance or dancing!)  Or March Madness, Sweet 16, Final 4, sporting events, coaching, cheering, etc.  So let’s all show our team spirit and get some songs posted!!

I chose a song I knew from around 1976--The year I graduated from High School and went off to college.  I used Dan Seals solo backing track as opposed to the original England Dan (Dan Seals) and John Ford Coley's original as it was better in tune with how I was feeling the other night.    Dan Seals' Brother, John, was half of Seals and Crofts...a favorite of mine.

Big thanks to Tommyrageous for hosting this week, and for contributing an novel theme!

But... gosh, do I know any basketball songs?  I have an older cousin who ate, breathed, and slept the game... while I was growing up he always seemed to think my being tall ought to translate into prowess on the court, and he cajoled me into joining several school and after-school teams, some of which he coached.  I'm afraid I never quite lived up to even the most minimal expectations of a competent player...but I learned a lot about the value of trying.

On to the challenge!  I still have a lot of listening to do on the previous one... I'll try to get caught up in OT tho...  :D

OK, the title of this one could refer equally well to moves on the dance floor, moves on the basketball court, or that eternal and gloriously naive teenage quest for effective "moves" to apply to a romantic interest--as if there were some magic formula that guaranteed success with these strange creatures we so often failed to recognize as humans like ourselves at that age.  (Though actually the lyrics seem to push the idea of nerve and self-confidence more than cynical come-on methods).

Wherever you may find yourself in the Big Game of Life, Young MC is there to remind you to...

    Bust a Move

Ah, school memories...  Having not been one of the reigning 'in-crowd' thru much of my school years, I guess I saw pretty vividly both the joys of finding a circle of fast friends, and the almost Lord of the Flies-like intensity of ostracism that could be visited on those seen as Different.  This Crash Test Dummies hit captures something of that childhood dynamic.

I've now recorded and posted this song--one of the first few I tackled upon joining SS--no less than five times, and strangely it's always seemed to get only 1 or 2 comments each time.  Maybe it's because the song itself is something of a misfit--a shy gangly kid with a big Adam's apple and an awkwardly deep reedy voice who, when put on the spot for a chorus, can only mumble something like...

Great challenge Tommy and challenging.

For us in Portugal of UK origin this is slightly unusual. I have managed to get a song with Sweet 16 in the title.

Sweet Little 16 .... Chuck Berry

Good morning?? everyone!!  I see we have a lot of additions, so I have to catch up on a few listens before I head out the door to work!  Just to clarify... my intention in this week's challenge was NOT to make it difficult for everyone, honest!!  lol  Anything at all associated with sports.. the tournament... school spirit... a dance.. dancing.. or just music that instills a spirit that makes one want to dance is acceptable!! Furthermore, any song that brings back a specific memory for you personally to your HS or College years, with a personal explanation of such is acceptable, as well... so relax! Share some nice memories and have fun with this!
